Flash Mobs Take Manhattan

June 16th, 2003

Our senior Manhattan correspondent David Danzig reports that New Yorkers are using e-mail to coordinate “inexplicable mobs” — huge crowds that materialize in public places and suddenly dissipate 10 minutes later.

Below I’ve pasted the e-mail announcement for the next mob, scheduled to take place Tuesday, June 17, 2003.

UPDATE: Be sure not to miss the photos of the event.

Flash mob in Singapore – not possible

Can a flash mob be ever staged in Singapore? (What is a flash mob?) I don’t think so. If you take part in one, most probably you will find yourself

You have no right authority title or dominion, you are like sheep who have gone astray and you follow a “shepherd with a twisted crook”,as only some one with a twisted mind would concieve of something so intimidating & antisocial, you are (or you should be) responsible citizens, you are being used, dont fool yourself into thinking you are important, you will held accountable for actions if you continue to go “flash mobbing”, there is no excuse for your behaviour. You are being manipulated. Dont follow a loser.

    YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right on! Go “twisted crook!” I don’t know what the hell that means but it sure sounds funny.

We promise not to follow any shepherd who doesn’t have either (a) a twisted crook, or (b) a crooked twist. Or perhaps (c) a wicked waddle.

I am organizing my flock of 300 flashmotors

to gather in their vehicles at the parking lot

of the Lombardi service area stop on the NJ tpke

Tuesday August 12, 2003. When the signal is given

the lead car, a 2002 white Toyota Camry, NY license 254-668 will hit the road on the NJ tpk

and get off at the exit for the GW Bridge. With

the other cars following, the cars will get onto

the upper level of the bridge. At the appropriate

time, all members of the flock will drive their

cars off the bridge like good little flashmobbers.

Any other flashretards that want to join are perfectly welcome.

Stay the fuck out of my state.

Stay out of your state, Sheepherder? But it’s such a difficult state to resist…

Damn; that means I’ll have to cancel my romantic New Jersey honeymoon. But so be it.

I am curious? Does the individual in the flash mob think as an individual or as a part of the herd? Are you instintively motivated to participate or is there a selfish reason for being part of a social happening? This “new” way of expression has me both intrigued and delighted. I am motivated by music. Have any flash mobs been motivated by a chord or two?

    1st Bern Flashmob

I just returned from the first Bern flashmob. Unfortunately the timing wasn’t perfect. Nevertheless, the number of people was quite high; I’d guess at least 40 or 50. They were a little bit hard to distinguish from normal tourists (although…

    Relax, Don’t Do It

Did you see that CSI Miami tonight is about Flash Mobs? Maybe it’s because I’m a blogger, but Flash Mobs seem to be a blogger creation*, so I think it’s really cool that they’re on a television show as popular…
