The Last Supper in Tahoe

March 4th, 2008

Some of my best friends from New York City and San Francisco came together this weekend to rent a house at Lake Tahoe. We had 13 people at the table and Dav had a clever photo idea:

I shot the same moment from the Apostles’ point of view:

A New Blue Bottle

January 23rd, 2008

San Francisco coffee freaks rejoice: a new Blue Bottle cafe opened today at 66 Mint Street (near 5th and Market). And they have a $20,000 brewing device called a siphon bar that might even put the Clover to shame, according to an article in today’s New York Times.

I tried a cup of their C.O.E. Cooperativa Vasquez from Nicaragua. It was the most expensive cup pot of coffee I’ve ever had but it was delicious, and what a spectacle.

In with Lighthouse, Out with Canvas

March 28th, 2007

The good news: Seattle’s Lighthouse Roasters is opening up a place in San Francisco. They make fantastic espresso drinks.

The bad news: their cafe will far away, in the Marina District.

The worse news: Canvas Gallery & Cafe is closing.

When I lived nearby, Canvas was a favorite hangout. Alas, they’ll close at the end of April.

It’s a unique space in San Francisco, big, bright and cheery, well-designed, on a busy corner across the street from Golden Gate Park. An ever-changing collection of local art covers the walls and hangs from the high ceilings. The space attracts an eclectic collection of students, artists, musicians and creative types; you can often overhear people brainstorming or collaborating on film and music projects here. They host lots of concerts and poetry readings and the monthly “Ask a Scientist” event. It’s one of those great urban spaces, a hothouse for local culture and community.

And now it will be replaced by a frigging seafood restaurant. Hey, better than a Starbuck’s.

Drop by and soak up Canvas while you still can.

Ritual Roasters 2.0

January 21st, 2007

ritro2.jpg

This just in from one of our embedded correspondents on the front lines of the San Francisco Coffee Wars: a sketch of the new Ritual Roasters site, a lush green semi-outdoor space somewhere in San Francisco. Sources say the new cafe will open in May.

UPDATE: It’s open now. It’s south of Cesar Chavez, off 3rd Street, at 1634 Jerrold Ave. (map).

Meetro Does Microsoft

January 8th, 2007

meetro does m$

I returned from holidays on the East Coast to find this postcard in my mailbox. It’s the guys from Meetro (a startup here in San Francisco) done up like Bill Gates and the first Microsoft team back in the 70s.

Bravo, Paul & co. Details here.

A New Yaginuma

July 5th, 2006

My dear friends Mie and Dav Yaginuma are parents as of 9:20 this morning. Tesla Rhea Yaginuma weighed in at 7 pounds. Welcome Tesla, and congratulations. You must have won the baby lottery to have these parents.

Above: Dav lactates in a demonstration of solidarity with Mie and love for Tesla. More photos: 1, 2. Details and even more photos: kokochi.com.

Tesla is healthy and beautiful, and her Mom’s happy and recovering well. They named her after Nikola Tesla. Experts confirmed that Tesla is not, as originally feared, the reincarnation of Kenneth Lay.

Update: Patrick Roddie took much better photos.

Where 2.0

June 24th, 2005

wherelogo.gifDamon, Jon and I will present Project PlaceSite and discuss wi-fi cafe fun in San Francisco next week at Where 2.0, O’Reilly’s new conference about location-aware tech.

If you’re there, come say hi.

Farewell, Odeon

April 20th, 2005

Unless this is one of Chicken John’s pranks, the Odeon is closing.

What a blow to San Francisco. If I learned the Golden Gate Bridge will be dismantled at the end of the month, that news wouldn’t strike me any harder.

No joke. Many, many of the people and things I love most about San Francisco are somehow associated with this place.

Thanks Chicken John, for this fantastic creativity-magnet called the Odeon. It was too good to last. I can’t wait to witness your next project.

Seeking Bay Area Wi-fi People

March 26th, 2005

wifi-survey.gifHelp supercharge wi-fi public places in the San Francisco Bay Area!

For my final Masters project at U.C. Berkeley I’m exploring new ways in which online social interaction can move into the offline (“real”) world — and learning what online services can add to face-to-face conversation.

An important part of our research is to learn how people here interact and use wi-fi (wireless Internet) in public and semi-public places.

If you’re 18 or older, live or work in the Bay Area and use wi-fi, you can help us immensely by taking a few minutes to answer the following brief survey. Your responses will be kept completely anonymous.

Here’s the survey: http://www.seansavage.com/survey

We need all the responses we can get, so it would be great if you could spread the word by pointing your Bay Area friends to the survey.

This summer we’ll post a report about what we learn; I’ll link to the report from here when it’s available.

Thanks!
